STANDARDIZED TESTS
 
PSAT: This is a practice test for the SAT usually administered in grade 10 and sometimes repeated in grade 11. It tests your abilities in critical reading, math and writing, but does not contain an essay. This exam lasts 2 hours and is administered by most high schools.
 
SAT: This 3 hour 45 minute test is the leading admissions exam in the United States. It measures English and mathematics abilities. It also contains a writing section. The test is administered in most foreign countries or by special arrangements. It is given several times a year. It can be repeated to improve the test score.
 
SAT Subject Tests: Many more competitive schools require 2 or 3 subject tests. These one hour multiple choice tests measure your abilities in a given subject area. There are 20 different subject tests offered. Some schools will allow you to select your own subjects while other specialized colleges require specific tests. SAT subject tests are not administered at every SAT test session. Subject tests may be retaken to improve score or try a different area of examination.
 
ACT: This exam lasts 3.5 hours plus an additional 30 minutes if you take the writing section. The ACT tests your abilities in English, Math and Science. The ACT can also be taken more than once. It is administered in countries around the world several times a year. If it is not offered in your country of residence you can arrange a special test date. The ACT has gained popularity in the United States in recent years with more colleges accepting it for admission.
 
TOEFL: This test measures your English language proficiency. It contains  reading, listening, speaking and writing sections. The test takes 4.5 hours and can be administered via the Web or paper format depending on your location. The test  is not required for international students whose first language is English.
 
AP: You can take the AP test even if you have not taken the AP course. If you score a 3,4 or 5 on an AP test, most colleges will give you college credit for the course. You can also take an AP class without being required to take the AP exam.
